Note: The screen shots date from 2015 and may be somewhat differentfrom the current state.
If you experience problems with setting up your machine, please do not wait until your first lab to resolve them. Contact your instructor or SLI for help, or visit the tutoring center (GOL-3660).

You should download and install the latest version (2019.2 as of July 2019) from the PyCharm download page, for your operating system.

PyCharm Setup
Configure PyCharm with Python3
After you have the software installed in the default location, you must configure PyCharm to work with Python 3. Follow these steps:
- Launch PyCharm from the program you downloaded/installed. If you are on a Mac and you get an error dialog that says you need to install Legacy Java 6, you can download it from here.
- On the welcome screen, go to the lower right of the window and select Configure -> Settings (or Preferences) -> Default Project -> Project Interpreter.
- In the settings window, you will now configure the default projects you make in PyCharm to use Python 3.
When the setting dialog comes up, select the Project Interpreter to choose the Python 3 interpreter that you just installed.Turn off the default use of venv for projects. You should see a settings button (e.g. gear) for adding an interpreter. Instead, choose the system interpreter to override the venv. Now select the OK button at the bottom and PyCharm will do the updates back on the welcome screen.
-
You will now turn off the style warnings for what's known as 'PEP 8', Python's style enforcement. (We do not use standard Python style in this course.) You do this by opening the preferences, selecting 'Inspections' under Editor -> CodeStyle, and unchecking the 'PEP 8' violation checkboxes as shown below. You can search for 'pep' to find this more quickly than scrolling.
Finally you can turn off the authorship line in the Editor's Code Templates for Python by erasing the whole line containing the __author__ text in the template; you can see the line in the screen below. (You may want to visit the templates later to customize them.)
- Now you will create your first project by selecting Create New Project in the welcome screen. The correct interpreter should already be selected. We suggest that you create a main folder for this course, and subfolders for the various assignments (e.g. Sample). Enter the full path under Location and select the Create button in the lower right.
- You are now in the main screen for your project. To view the directory hierarchy for the project, select from the pull down menu, View -> Tool Window -> Project.
- You will now create, compile, and run a small program that verifies you are configured correctly. Right click on the Sample folder in the project view and select New -> Python File. In the dialog window under Name, enter sample.py.
- This will open the new file in an editor to the right. Enter the following code example.
- Warning: If you cut and paste it from a browser, make sure that the indentation matches.
- You can first run the code by right clicking in the code window and selecting Run sample. If everything is correct, you should see a separate Python turtle drawing window come up, and the console should open in the bottom pane of PyCharm. Then the program should draw the square and pause for the user to hit the enter key into the console pane. After you press the enter key, the turtle drawing window should close.
- Notice after the initial run that the 'run configuration' is in the upper right. You can simply select the green arrow next to it to re-run the program.
- If you experience problems, then the program will fail somewhere and not run. Try to fix the problems if you can.Otherwise plan to ask your instructor, SLI, TA or a friend that might knowhow to help.
PyCharm provides methods for installing, uninstalling, and upgrading Python packages for a particular Python interpreter. By default, PyCharm uses pip to manage project packages. For Conda environments you can use the conda package manager.
To manage Python packages for the Python interpreter, select the Python Interpreter page in the project Settings/Preferences or select Interpreter Settings in the Python Interpreter widget.
If you select a Python interpreter with the configured Conda environment, the Use Conda Package Manager toggle appears in the packages area toolbar.
Use this toggle to manage packages from the Conda environment repository. By default, this toggle is switched off and you can manage only the packages available with the selected Python interpreter.
